Project info:

Exhibition and interactive installation design for Heide Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition design for Brassaï’s collection of photographs, displayed in Australia for the first time since the 1970s, presents his work in a way that reflects his own philosophy: to “suggest, not insist or explain.”

With a focus on the artist’s iconic images of the city and its people by night, the exhibition also considers his friendship with Picasso and other leading figures of the Parisian avant-garde, his experiments with Surrealism, and his hallmark photographs of graffiti. This survey offers a visual journey into the intimate world of Paris in the 1930s.

Exhibition design often seeks to create moments of intensity while remaining conscious of the temporary life cycle of its materials. Here, a restrained material palette forms a lightweight system of suspended panels that can be disassembled and reused beyond the exhibition. Alongside these immersive gallery spaces, quieter moments of relief are introduced through a simple inversion of colour.
