Project info:

We joined ARM Architecture as one of 4 shortlisted teams to submit for the Melbourne University New Student Precinct. The submission was recognised by the jury, receiving second place in the competition. Studio Bright took the lead to develop an architectural solution to reconfigure 2 existing brutalist buildings into the New Student Precinct Library.

A new entry and circulation core was proposed that links the 2 buildings and this new library will be the centerpiece of the New Student Precinct’s extended hours offering, with a range of formal and informal spaces. The new canopy unifies the 2 buildings and identifies key entries and address. It is used to signify new program within the existing buildings and to allow opportunities for relief spaces connected with existing floor areas. A key part of the proposition is the inclusion of landscape elements within the architecture. These provide relief from the deep floor plates of the existing buildings as well as improve amenity for students.
